Got permission to go to West Lafayette and spend the weekend with Kevin & Dacia and family. We celebrated Kevin's birthday and had a great Father's Day/35th Anniversary! We played Dominon, Railroad Tycoon, and Word on the Street, ate delicious food and had a nice time together. At Primary we heard Kaitlyn give the scripture and bear her testimony, Bryson give a talk, and Kevin sing a song we hadn't heard before - about the Word of Wisdom - from the Primary songbook. We enjoyed Skype or Facetime calls from Stephen & Candi and the kids, Ryan & Chelsea, and Kristin & Joe. It was a nice ending to a good week. We made a Costco run in Indianapolis on the way to West Lafayette and filled our trunk!
One of our morning walks this week was to Christy Woods - right on the Ball State campus. It is an 18 acre fenced site set aside by the Ball Brothers in 1918 when they donated land and money to the state for the university. Three-fourths of the site is a forrest with 6 kinds of mature trees. The woods is a "federally protected botanical preserve because it is the last standing sizable old growth Scarlet Oak babitat." (heard one of our YSAs give her Master's presentation on landscape architecture and she talks like that!). Since 1928 the site also contains wild flowers species from around Indiana. We didn't notice any of the supposed ghosts that are reported to haunt the woods - (probably scared of our missionary badges).
Gary taught a lunch lesson - the Parable of the Wheat & Tares - complete with a puzzle he cut out for each person (6 students). Gary & Brenda each taught half of the Faith lesson on Thursday night (12 students). The other 10 students (learning the Old Testament in the upstairs class) joined us for Nachos and chips and grapes. Thanks to my Orchard 5 VTs (Wendy & Anna) for the Nacho Cheese. It was a huge hit with the students!
Here's a before and after photo of our Institute porch. Looks a bit more inviting than when we arrived. The Elders have planned an open house at the Institute on the 29th and we are trying to get everything spiffed up and ready! Had an interview with President Collins on Thursday. He suggested some great places to see on our preparation days.
